Global Local returns in April at Rich Mix and continues it's journey of London's global music. This month we've partnered with Attitude is Everything to bring you a great spread of music:
Captain Angelo formed amid the Tuition fees riots and snowstorms of late 2010. Front man and songwriter Miles-Alex Peckover, decided to craft an organic sound that brought lyrical content and story telling to the fore. In the lyrics there is a distinct voice in the form of the “Guitar Boy” - torn between a love of natural beauty and the antics of his London at night. His brother, Jonathan Peckover, weaves smokey trumpet melodies around the finger picked guitar while the lilting, angelic voice of Rose Betts duels with the husky, weather beaten lyrics. To add to the textures on display they recruited the quixotic multi instrumentalist Thomas Bush to tangle it all in autoharp and drizzled clarinet. Providing the foundation of this beautiful mess are Geoffrey Threadgold and Nigel Bancroft, providing bass and percussion - always driving and building underneath with a thudding blend of jazz and blues. The hub of the band is Miles-Alex’s South East London bedroom, filled with home-adapted guitars, scribbly notebooks and a piano found on the street.
Bug Prentice - Bug Prentice is a three-piece band formed by guitarist and songwriter Ally Craig, bassist Ruth Goller and drummer Stephen Gilchrist. Our influences range from Deerhoof to Thelonious Monk, via Orson Welles.
Special Guests: Calm of Zero (ex Echobelly) - Sonya Aurora Madan and Glenn Johansson are Calm of Zero. Acoustic Sessions 1 is the title of their first musical outing, a 'mini' album of six songs, recorded in London with a six string guitar, a twelve string guitar and the barest of embellishments. A chance to hear the Calm before the Storm: Calm of Zero.
Marlo Donato - Mid-tempo pop. That's the quick categorization, but Marlo's vocals have an edgy quaver that simultaneoulsy hints at coffee shop and alt-pop. Supremely balladic to energetically with a melancholy edge. My favourite cut is 'Breathe Life Into Me,' the most energetic track which will have you smiling and dancing around before it's through.
Mike Oliver - After playing their first gig at a Christmas church concert, The P.I.'s went on to play at several local venues including Riffs and 12 bar. They had been in formation for about a year when they achieved recognition with an article in the national press. After the break up of the band in mid-2008, Mike began to build on the writing skills he had already acquired as the main sonwriter and lyricist for the P.I.'s by writing his own solo material. Which over the period of about a year developed into a more melodic style, as opposed to the more gutsy rock sound of the P.I.'s.

Kazimierz Piechowski was transported to Auschwitz on the 20th June 1940 for being a Polish scout, then considered part of the Polish Intelligentsia. Exactly two years later, at midday on Saturday June 20th 1942, Kazik escaped from the Nazi concentration camp. He masterminded his way out with three other political prisoners, disguised in SS uniforms, and by appropriating a Steyr 220 car belonging to Rudolf Höss, the then
Commandant of the death camp. Kazik is the only one now left from the four friends who made the escape, who can tell us first hand what happened.
Upon discovering Kazik’s story, songwriter Katy Carr wrote a tribute song,
‘Kommander’s Car,’ from the point of view of Kazik, narrating the last do-or-die 80 metres of his break for freedom. Katy felt compelled to share this song with Kazik, and her meeting with Kazik in Poland has been captured in a short documentary, 'Kazik and the Kommander’s Car', directed by Hannah Lovell.
Kazik’s life is an inspiring and enduring story of our age. It needs to never be forgotten. We are very honoured to have Kazik attending this event, and talking to us in person.
Public event, free admission. Café on site.
Donations to the Museum of Auschwitz.
In association with Kinoteka film festival and the Polish Cultural Institute.
